Why Pre-Cool Your Commercial Air Conditioning Systems

The answer is quite simple really you can reduce the energy usage of your air conditioning condenser by up to 30% by using air conditioner misters during summer. The reduced ambient air temperature provided to the condenser by the CoilCool Air Conditioner Misting System, allows the air conditioner to operate as efficiently as if the ambient temperature was only 26oC. The CoilCool system can be fitted to any new or existing commercial HVAC condenser system to take advantage of the pre-cooling power of having the air enter the condenser at a much lower temperature.

Power Cost Savings

In warm and hot summer temperatures the compressor in your air conditioning outdoor unit will have to work significantly harder to remove the heat from the coolant. With the reduced temperature of the air flowing through the coils the compressor will have to do far less work to expel the heat from the coolant, using far less power in the process.

Increased Cooling Capacity

Your air conditioning unit can often struggle to produce enough cool air to keep interior of your commercial premises cool. With an air conditioner mist spray the air conditioner behaves as if the temperature outside is only 26oC, allowing it to provide ample cooling for the interior of your commercial premises.

Reduced Maintenance

As a result of lowering the head pressures within the air conditioning condenser, the compressor life is greatly extended. Head pressures inside your condenser unit can excessively high when the system cannot expel heat into the surrounding air but by reducing the temperature of the surrounding air compressor life is extended due to the lower load and shorter cycle times required.

The Air Conditioner Misting System

Air Conditioner Misting is a very simple concept. It consists of having high pressure lines containing microscopic nozzles installed at an appropriate distance in front of your cooling coils, in order to atomise the water into microscopic droplets. These droplets then flash evaporate into the air entering the cooling coils, dropping the air temperature significantly.

The objective with a condenser misting system is to evaporate the water before it gets to the coils as it is both more effective than wetting the cooling coils and it prevents build up of impurities on the coils.

The air conditioner misting system is reducing the outdoor air temperature entering the condenser coils by cooling the air with evaporation. As it takes heat to evaporate water, this heat is extracted from the surrounding air and leaves cooled air to enter the condenser cooling coils.

So What Difference Will It Make?

As the ambient temperature rises the air conditioning condenser is going to have to work harder to cool the refrigerant. Evaporative cooling, and in this case an air con misting system, has been used for many years as a means of cooling the air. Fogging and misting systems have been used in alfresco areas forever 25 years to cool customers in these outdoor areas. We are simply applying this technology to the air entering the air conditioning condenser coil unit.

Many air conditioning units on large high rise buildings cooled via a cooling tower. This is just another form of evaporative cooling however in an air conditioner misting system we are applying the evaporative cooling to the inlet coils of the air conditioning condenser.

We have seen an immediate drop of over 30% in the power being used by an air conditioning condenser unit once the air conditioning misting system has been turned on. This saving in power demand and usage is only the start of the savings made with an air con misting system. Has the air conditioning system is now running more effectively unable to cool the refrigerant and the premises more quickly the air conditioning system doesn't need to run and go through it's cooling Cycles as often resulting in significant savings in wear and tear and maintenance on your system. This is a significantly harder cost to calculate as it will vary from system to system however it will result in significant maintenance cost reductions due to the lower cycle times.

Power Savings

The air con misting system will reduce the amount of power the air conditioner uses on warm days as the air conditioner has to work harder on those days. It will reduce the electricity demand (kW) and electricity usage (kWh). With Australia's energy system transitioning and having very little reserve capacity, air conditioner misting systems will be a major factor in ongoing power price structures and reliability for your business.

Power Cost Savings

As you are using less power, particularly at peak times, your total power bill will be less. This applies even more so to organisations that are paying demand rate power costs that vary according to the time of day and the current peak demand. If you are using less power at peak times you will not only be saving actual power costs, but will also be in a better position to negotiate better power contracts as you will have less power requirements on peak load days.

Reduced Maintenance

With less load on your air conditioning condenser, the compressor will need to cut in less often to maintain the required cooling. The cycling of the compressors is usually the highest energy usage component of the condenser unit, whether it is a multi compressor system or a variable speed drive. As the compressor is running less it will require less maintenance and extend the effective life of it and the other components, so a condenser misting system will result in reduced maintenance costs.

Increased Cooling Capacity

With the air conditioner now operating more efficiently due to the air conditioner mist spray, the system is now more easily able to supply enough cool air on extreme heat days. With the condenser misting system feeding much cooler air into the condenser coils, it will run as if the temperature is significantly lower.

Reduced Emissions

As businesses are expected to reduce their emissions to reduce environmental impacts, an air conditioner misting system will reduce your electricity usage and will contribute to your emissions reduction target.

Will the Savings be Constant?

Air conditioner misting is basically evaporative cooling and as such, becomes even more effective as the temperature rises, as your air conditioner mist spray will evaporate even faster. The savings will be higher as the temperature rises.
